Candy Crash Saga versus Candy Swipe
Recently, a dispute has come to light between two game developers based around the very popular and successful game, Candy Crush. The developers of Candy Crush Saga, King.com, have been accused of cloning the game Candy Swipe.
Albert Ransom developed the game, Candy Swipe, in 2010. King then released their version, Candy Crush Saga in 2012. The twist in this battle is that although Candy Swipe was the released two years prior, the makers of Candy Crush are claiming that Candy Swipe is the clone, not them.
King believes that Candy Swipe’s trademark of the game should be disregarded because they created a game called Candy Crusher prior to Candy Crush Saga. When you look at the Candy Swipe and Candy Crush, they are very similar. Not only do the boards and candy resemble each other, the concept is almost identical. Both games follow the idea of matching three candies together in order to beat the different levels.
Apparently, since Candy Crusher has an independent trademark and was developed by the same company as Candy Crush, the trademark that Ransom has on Candy Swipe may be void. This could mean that the company would win in this legal dispute and finally be able to trademark their game. It is turning out to be a battle of a game-developing titan versus a small independent company who created the game in honor of his mother. Who do you think will come out on top, the multi-billion dollar company or the small independent game developer?
