King Media, Creators of Candy Crush, File For IPO

On Tuesday, February 18, 2014 the makers of Candy Crush Saga, King Media Entertainment, filed for an initial public offering. With over 93 million average daily users and annual revenue of $1.9 billion, the company hopes that investors will buy a piece of their stock.

The wildly popular game where players create three-piece candy combinations has continued to grow 7,000 percent in the last year in profit. King Media also created the hit games Pet Rescue Saga and Farm Heroes Saga. The company has its headquarters in Ireland, but has offices in California and across Europe as well.

The offering is said to be up to $500 million on the New York Stock Exchange, although they have not yet determined an IPO price or valuation. Although the game that started on Facebook and made its way into the Apple store and Google Play has been successful so far, people fear that users may lose interest.

Since the U.S. Company, Zynga, filed for an IPO in 2011, they have performed poorly. Does this mean investors may be more hesitant to invest in King Media? With three major games accounting for more that 95% of King Media’s revenue, will they be able to sustain the level that they are at? Hopefully, the company continues to grow in profit, as well as in the market.
