King Is Settling Their Trademark Disputes

King is settling many of their trademark disputes that have arisen over the past few months. Compared to some of the other companies they were up against, King’s revenue and users blew the others out of the water.

Many people believed that they were using their power and money in spite of the other companies. However, King believed that they were just protecting their intellectual property.

Over the past few months King tried to trademark the terms ‘candy’ and ‘saga’. The makers of ‘CandySwipe’ were under attack for using the word ‘candy’ in their game title. Another game that was being attacked was ‘The Banner Saga’, developed by Stoic for using the term ‘saga’ in their title. King believed that users were getting confused by the other titles, and it was done deliberately by these other developers.

In the past few days, things have taken a turn for the better in this battle. Settlements were reached for both ‘CandySwipe’ and ‘The Banner Saga’.

Albert Ranson, maker of ‘Candy Swipe’ stated on the website:

“I am happy to announce that I have amicably resolved my dispute with King over my ‘Candy Swipe’ trademark and that I am withdrawing my opposition to their mark and they are withdrawing their counterclaim against mine. I have learned that they picked the Candy Crush name before I released my game and that they were never trying to take my game away. Both our games can continue to coexist without confusing players.”

Stoic, the makers of ‘The Banner Saga’ also stated:

“Stoic is pleased to have come to an agreement with King regarding Stoic’s The Banner Saga trademark, which enables both parties to protect their respective trademarks now and in the future”.

This settlement seams necessary in order for King to stay on good graces with the public and their competitors. People do not want a giant coming in and controlling the mobile gaming industry. Lets hope that they continue to work out their disputes with other developers.
